◾ During an interview on Youtube, when asked if people question him for practicing a "feminine" sport, three-time world figure skating champion Nathan Chen answered that, as a "straight male athlete in a fairly LGBTQ-dominated sport" it's "pretty messed up" that they are "belittled" because figure skating has a feminine connotation and people would rather watch guys play hockey instead of "skate around".
◾ Nathan also said that he and his friends are trying to "shift that approach to skating" by using "more pop or hip hop style songs" and dancing instead of "classic pieces" and "posh sort of balle-style movement".

◾ Nathan Chen is known for focusing more on jumps than artistry in his programs. In 2017 he told ESPN, "If something you really want to watch is artistry, go watch ice dancing".

ReplyDeleteYeah, not at all what Nathan said. That's twisting his words quite a bit there. First off, the question asked of him was if he's run into people telling him that he should be playing hockey instead of figure skating because of the false perception/stereotype that figure skating is feminine. Nathan answered that, yes, as a straight male athlete in a sport that is "fairly dominated by"/has a lot of LGBTQ athletes, he has indeed had to deal with that issue...however, he thinks it's a messed up view people have of the sport because figure skating isn't inherently feminine. He then jumps into the idea that figure skating isn't taken seriously enough and that the skaters want to be taken seriously. He says it's belittling because they, all figure skaters, have spent their lives honing their craft just like any athlete from any other sport. What he really said wasn't anywhere as bad as what some have made it out to be, IMO. People are doing a lot of reaching here.
